Dubai Metro Directions Made Simple

Want to zip around Dubai without getting lost? The Metro is the easiest way to see the city, avoid traffic and save money. Below you’ll find the basics you need to hop on a train, find the right line and get to your spot fast.

How the Metro is Set Up

The system has two main lines: the Red Line and the Green Line. The Red Line runs from Rashidiya in the east to UAE Exchange in the west, passing the airport, Downtown and Jumeirah Lakes Towers. The Green Line loops through Deira, Bur Dubai and Al Qusais. Trains run every 5‑7 minutes during peak hours and every 8‑10 minutes off‑peak.

Each station has clear signs in English and Arabic. Look for the colored circle above the doors – red for the Red Line, green for the Green Line. Platforms are marked with the direction you’re heading, so you’ll know whether the next stop is “Al Maktoum” or “Jebel Ali.”

Buying a Nol Card and Getting On Board

First thing you need is a Nol Card. You can buy a Red, Silver or Gold card at any Metro station, at select malls or online. The Red card works for the Red Line only, while the Silver card covers both lines and the bus network. Load it with cash – the minimum is 20 AED – and tap it on the gate to enter.

When you reach the gate, hold the card flat on the reader until you hear a beep. If the card is low on balance, the gate stays red and you’ll need to add credit at the kiosk. Once you’re in, follow the platform signs and stand behind the yellow line until the train arrives.

Inside the train, seats are marked “Women Only” on each side. If you’re traveling alone, you can sit anywhere; if you’re a woman with a child, the designated area offers a bit more privacy. Keep your bag close and give up your seat to anyone who needs it – it’s part of the local etiquette.

To exit, tap your Nol Card on the exit gate the same way you entered. The fare is calculated automatically based on the stations you passed. A short ride on the Red Line costs about 4 AED, while longer trips can go up to 8 AED.

Need to get to the airport? Just board the Red Line at any station and get off at “Airport Terminal 1” or “Airport Terminal 3.” Trains are equipped with luggage racks, so you can keep your suitcase handy. If you’re heading to the beach, “Dubai Marina” and “Mall of the Emirates” stations are just a short walk from the water and the shopping malls.

Peak hours are 7‑10 am and 5‑8 pm. Trains can be crowded, but the system runs on time. If you want a quieter ride, travel after 9 pm when the stations are less busy.

That’s all you need to know to navigate Dubai Metro with confidence. Grab a Nol Card, pick the right line, and you’ll be everywhere in the city in no time.
